Ocotea bullata
Stinkwood
National Tree Number: 118
Family: Lauraceae
Alternativly called: Black Stinkwood, Cape Walnut, Cape laurel, Laurel Wood.
Afrikaans: Stinkhout, Xhosa/Zulu: Umnukani.
The name 'stinkwood' comes from a strong smell released when the leaves are crushed. It produces very valuable timber, formerly much sought after to make furniture. Due to over-exploitation, it is now an endangered and protected species.
