Afrikaans: Witmelkhout, Xhosa: Ximafana, Zulu: Umakhwelafingqane.
This tree is primarily found in coastal forests, as well as inland bushveld, with very hard timber, dense foliage, black berries and small, strongly scented, greenish flowers. The leaves are dark green, with a pale midrib protruding below. Young leaves have fine rusty hairs below. The bark is rough, with rectangular cracks. Several specimens of this tree are provincial heritage sites.
